Предстоящи фантастични филми 2013

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies in 2013 (Part 1 of 3)

Science fiction, fantasy & horror movies we get to see in 2013 . . . after the Earth has narrowly escaped the Mayan apocalypse!
(Read part 2 of this article next week.)

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

PLOT: 15 years after their traumatic gingerbread-house incident, siblings Hansel and Gretel have become a formidable team of bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world.
Director: Tommy Wirkola
Stars: Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Thomas Mann, Peter Stormare, Zoe Bell
Release date: 11 January
WE SAY: A so-called “European co-production” filmed in Germany – usually not a good sign. But it stars rising star Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker and Hawkeye in The Avengers) so there’s some hope.

Warm Bodies

PLOT: After a zombie becomes involved with the girlfriend of one of his victims, their romance sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.
Director: Jonathan Levine
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Teresa Palmer, John Malkovich, Dave Franco
Release date: 1 February
WE SAY: New movie by the director of All the Boys Love Mandy Lane. If vampires can fall in love, then why not zombies?

Beautiful Creatures

PLOT: A supernatural drama centered on a local teenager and the mysterious new girl in town who uncover dark secrets about their respective families.
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Stars: Alice Englert, Viola Davis, Emma Thompson, Emmy Rossum
Release date: 15 February
WE SAY: Southern gothic. Warner is obviously hoping to replicate some of the old Harry Potter magic with this adaptation of the first book in the series of popular “young adult” novels with magical overtones, but the books aren’t all that well-known though. (Opens on the same weekend as the fifth Die Hard movie, A Good Day to Die Hard.)

Escape from Planet Earth

PLOT: Astronaut Scorch Supernova finds himself caught in a trap when he responds to an SOS from a notoriously dangerous alien planet: Earth!
Director: Callan Brunker
Stars: Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, James Gandolfini, Jessica Alba
Release date: 15 February
WE SAY: A computer-animated movie by the studio that brought us . . . Hoodwinked.

I, Frankenstein

PLOT: Frankenstein’s creature finds himself caught in an all-out, centuries old war between two immortal clans.
Director: Stuart Beattie
Stars: Aaron Eckhart, Yvonne Strahovski, Bill Nighy, Jai Courtney
Release date: 22 February
WE SAY: If the story sounds a bit familiar then it is probably because this movie is based on a graphic novel by actor-screenwriter Kevin Grevioux, who co-wrote the first Underworld movie.

Elysium

PLOT: Set in the year 2159, where the very wealthy lives on a man-made space station while the rest of population reside on a ruined Earth, a man takes on a mission that could bring equality to the polarized worlds.
Director: Neill Blomkamp
Stars: Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga
Release date: 1 March
WE SAY: Highly-anticipated sophomore directing effort by South African-Canadian Neill Blomkamp of District 9 fame. Expect some allegorical sci-fi and loads of Prometheus-style hype as the movie’s details have been kept under tight wraps.

Oz: The Great and Powerful

PLOT: How the Wizard arrived in Oz and became the ruler. A prequel to The Wizard of Oz.
Director: Sam Raimi
Stars: James Franco, Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz, Mila Kunis
Release date: 8 March
WE SAY: Yet another “dark” retelling of a fairy tale, this time by Evil Dead and Spider-man director Sam Raimi.
Predictably one of two Hollywood Oz projects for 2013, the other being the computer-animated Dorothy of Oz “sequel” which features the voice talents of Patrick Stewart, Dan Aykroyd and Kelsy Grammer amongst others. Unsurprisingly an adaptation of Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (it was also the basis for a successful stage musical) is scheduled for 2014.

Carrie

PLOT: A sheltered high school girl unleashes her newly developed telekinetic powers after she is pushed too far by her peers.
Director: Kimberly Peirce
Stars: Chloë Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, Judy Greer, Gabriella Wilde
Release date: 15 March
WE SAY: Another adaptation of Stephen King’s first published novel or a remake of the 1978 movie starring Sissy Spacek? You decide. (Weirdly enough there had already been a made-for-TV remake in 2002 no-one knows about and a belated, failed sequel in 1999 titled The Rage: Carrie 2.)

Jack the Giant Killer

PLOT: A modern day fairy tale in which the long-standing peace between men and giants is threatened, as a young farmer leads an expedition into the giants’ kingdom in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped princess.
Director: Bryan Singer
Stars: Nicholas Hoult, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy
Release date: 22 March
WE SAY: Another revisionist fairy tale, this time directed by Bryan Singer of X-Men and Superman Returns fame. The movie was supposed to have been released in 2012 but was moved to 2013.)

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

PLOT: The G.I. Joes are not only fighting their mortal enemy Cobra; they are forced to contend with threats from within the government that jeopardize their very existence.
Director: Jon M. Chu
Stars: Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, Ray Park, Bruce Willis
Release date: 29 March
WE SAY: Moved from 2012 to 2013 at the last moment supposedly to convert to 3-D, this movie is both a reboot and sequel at the same time as it introduces The Rock and Bruce Willis to the 2009 franchise.

The Host

PLOT: A parasitic alien soul is injected into the body of Melanie Stryder. Instead of carrying out her race’s mission of taking over the Earth, “Wanda” (as she comes to be called) forms a bond with her host and sets out to aid other free humans.
Director: Andrew Niccol
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt, Jake Abel
Release date: 29 March
WE SAY: Film based on author Stephanie Meyer’s only non-Twilight novel, which is basically Invasion of the Body Snatchers as told by one of the pod people. Needless to say, it is obviously a romance. (We called it “what would happen if Ned Flanders decided to write science fiction” in a review.)
Will it make the same sort of megabucks at the box office? Hollywood is certainly hoping so: the bookshelves are groaning under the weight of a gazillion Young Adult paranormal books out there begging to be filmed! Krrr-ching!

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies in 2013 (Part 2 of 3)

More science fiction, fantasy & horror movies we get to see in 2013!
(Read part 1 of this article here; read part three here.)

The Evil Dead

PLOT: Mia, a young woman struggling with sobriety, heads to a remote cabin with her brother and a group of friends, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads to danger and horror.
Director: Fede Alvarez
Stars: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Jessica Lucas, Lou Taylor Pucci
Release date: 12 April
WE SAY: A Hollywood remake designed to irk long-time fans of Sam Raimi’s 1981 cult horror movie. That it is scripted by Diablo Cody of Jennifer’s Body fame and doesn’t feature the legendary Bruce Campbell isn’t helping either.

Oblivion

PLOT: A court martial sends a veteran soldier to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself.
Director: Joseph Kosinski
Stars: Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Andrea Riseborough, Olga Kurylenko
Release date: 26 April
WE SAY: The sophomore directing effort of TRON: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The project is based in a graphic novel by Kosinski and the project has been in development for the past five years.

Iron Man 3

PLOT: Rumor has it that Tony Stark / Iron Man will head to China to face his toughest opponent, the Mandarin.
Director: Shane Black
Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle
Release date: 3 May
WE SAY: This franchise just might get a much-needed shot in the arm by new director Shane Black, who takes over from Jon Favreau. Black worked on the Lethal Weapon movies amongst others and collaborated with Robert Downey Jr. on the underappreciated Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Speaking of which, Downey Jr. will probably be richer than his fictional movie counterpart after this movie!

Star Trek 2

PLOT: Who knows?
Director: J.J. Abrams
Stars: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Benedict Cumberbatch
Release date: 17 May
WE SAY: Is Cumberbatch Khan? Will Leonard Nimoy appear again as Spock Prime? The Internet is awash with endless fan speculation, but will this sequel to 2009’s reboot live up to all the typical J.J. Abrams hype?

Epic

PLOT: A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil is taking place. She bands together with a rag-tag group characters in order to save their world – and ours.
Director: Chris Wedge
Stars: Amanda Seyfried, Josh Hutcherson, Beyoncé Knowles, Colin Farrell
Release date: 24 May
WE SAY: New flick by the director of Ice Age and Robots isn’t quite what you’d expect. Check the trailer here: http://youtu.be/Nd3vfEU_cI8

After Earth

PLOT: After a crash landing, a father and son explore a planet that was evacuated by humans 1000 years earlier.
Director: M. Night Shyamalan
Stars: Will Smith, Jaden Smith, Isabelle Fuhrman, Sophie Okonedo
Release date: 7 June
WE SAY: After a string of flops Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan can still find gainful employment?!

Man of Steel

PLOT: A child sent to Earth from a dying planet is adopted by a couple in rural Kansas. Posing as a journalist, he uses his extraordinary powers to protect his new home from an insidious evil.
Director: Zack Snyder
Stars: Henry Cavill, Russell Crowe, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon
Release date: 14 June
WE SAY: This Superman reboot by 300 and Watchmen director Zack Snyder promises to stray from the path trod by Richard Donner’s influential 1978 Superman: The Movie which Bryan Singer followed in 2006 with Superman Returns. A new Superman and no Lex Luthor as Supes battles it out with super villains from his native planet of Krypton!

The End of the World

PLOT: While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are faced with the apocalypse.
Directors: Evan Goldberg, Seth Rogen
Stars: Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, James Franco, Paul Rudd
Release date: 14 June
WE SAY: Meta-textual comedy by the Knocked Up crowd.

World War Z

PLOT: A U.N. employee is racing against time and fate, as he travels the world trying to stop the outbreak of a deadly Zombie pandemic.
Director: Marc Forster
Stars: Brad Pitt, Mireille Enos, David Morse, James Badge Dale
Release date: 21 June
WE SAY: As you might see from the above plot description the movie is going to be somewhat different from Max Brooks’ fan favorite World War Z novel set in the aftermath of the zombie apocalypse. Apparently the movie ran into all kinds of problems as its budget also skyrocketed.

Pacific Rim

PLOT: When an alien attack threatens the Earth’s existence, giant robots piloted by humans are deployed to fight off the menace.
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Stars: Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, Charlie Hunnam
Release date: 12 July
WE SAY: The director of Hellboy’s latest flick has giant robots in it and that’s about all fans need to know to go watch it!

Upcoming Sci-Fi Movies in 2013 (Part 3 of 3)

Our final installment in our series of science fiction, fantasy & horror movies we will get to see in 2013 . . .
(Read part 1 and part 2 of this article.)

R.I.P.D.

PLOT: Action comedy in which a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers working for the Rest in Peace Department and tries to find the man who murdered him.
Director: Robert Schwentke
Stars: Ryan Reynolds, Jeff Bridges, Mary-Louise Parker, Kevin Bacon
WE SAY: Zombie cops? It sounds more like a TV pilot than an actual movie and the fact that the screenwriters worked on Aeon Flux and the Clash of the Titans remake doesn’t help either.

The Wolverine

PLOT: Wolverine travels to Japan to train with a samurai warrior.
Director: James Mangold
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Will Yun Lee, Hiroyuki Sanada
Release date: 26 July 2013
WE SAY: Second movie featuring the X-Men character played by Hugh Jackman.

RoboCop

PLOT: In a crime-ridden city, a fatally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him.
Director: José Padilha
Stars: Gary Oldman, Joel Kinnaman, Samuel L. Jackson
Release date: 9 August
WE SAY: Remake of the 1987 Paul Verhoeven classic by the Brazilian director of the Elite Squad movies.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

PLOT: The son of Poseidon and his friends head into the Sea of Monsters to find the mythical Golden Fleece.
Director: Thor Freudenthal
Stars: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson
Release date: 16 August
WE SAY: Adaptation of second book in Rick Riordan’s series of books.

The Seventh Son

PLOT: An 18th century adventure story centered on young Thomas, who is apprenticed to the local Spook to learn to fight evil spirits. His first great challenge comes when the powerful Mother Malkin escapes her confinement while the Spook is away.
Director: Sergey Bodrov
Stars: Ben Barnes, Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, Alicia Vikander
Release date: 18 October
WE SAY: Warner is looking for the next Harry Potter movie franchise, but they can’t have too much faith in this series’ established readership seeing as they have changed its title.
This movie is based on the first book in the so-called Wardstone Chronicles series of fantasy novels by Joseph Delaney (10 books have been published thus far). Confusingly the books were published as The Last Apprentice in the U.S. however and the first book is known as The Spook’s Apprentice.
Incidentally, a search for “Wardstone Chronicles” on Amazon.com will also bring up a series of unrelated fantasy books by M.R. Mathias called the Wardstone Trilogy. Sigh.
The studio was probably hoping not to confuse audiences with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the 2010 Disney flop starring Nicolas Cage.

Ender’s Game

PLOT: 70 years after a horrific alien war, an unusually gifted child is sent to an advanced military school in space to prepare for a future invasion.
Director: Gavin Hood
Stars: Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin, Ben Kingsley
Release date: 1 November
WE SAY: After a gazillion years in development hell Orson Scott Card’s science fiction classic 1985 is finally being made into a movie by South African Gavin Hood of Tsotsi and Wolverine fame.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

PLOT: The continuing adventures of Katniss Everdeen, which take place in a futuristic dystopian world, as she prepares for the Quarter Quell.
Director: Francis Lawrence
Stars: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Jena Malone, Liam Hemsworth, Elizabeth Banks, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci
Release date: 22 November
WE SAY: The second novel in Suzanne Collins’ popular Young Adult series. Trying to milk it for all its worth, Hollywood is going to adapt the last novel in the series (Mockingjay) as two movies in the same way that they did with Twilight and Hobbit.

The Hobbit: There and Back Again

PLOT: Thorin and Company have reached Lake-town and it is time for the hobbit Bilbo Baggins to fulfill his contract with the dwarves . . .
Director: Peter Jackson
Stars: Benedict Cumberbatch, Elijah Wood, Luke Evans
Release date: 13 December
WE SAY: Second part of the Lord of the Rings “prequel.”

Riddick

PLOT: Betrayed by his own kind and left for dead on a desolate planet, Riddick fights for survival against alien predators and becomes more powerful and dangerous than ever before.
Director: David Twohy
Stars: Karl Urban, Vin Diesel, Katee Sackhoff
Release date: TBA 2013
WE SAY: Third movie to feature Vin Diesel as Riddick following Pitch Black (2000) and The Chronicles of Riddick (2004).

Gravity

PLOT: Astronauts attempt to return to earth after debris crashes into their space shuttle, leaving them drifting alone in space.
Director: Alfonso Cuarón
Stars: Sandra Bullock, George Clooney, Basher Savage
Release date: TBA 2013
WE SAY: New movie by the acclaimed director of Harry Potter & the Prisoner of Azkaban and Children of Men.

Movies that (probably) won’t make it in time for 2013: Steven Spielberg’s Robopocalypse (moved to 2014); We Mortals Are (aka All You Need is Kill, starring Tom Cruise); Neuromancer (William Gibson adap); Snow Crash; Stephen King’s The Stand (to be directed by Ben Affleck); Darkchylde (based on the Dark Horse comic, to be directed by John Carpenter).
